Important Tip

Coronavirus in China has been limited to very few provinces over the past few weeks. The highest number of confirmed cases was reported from the Hubei province, where the virus is believed to have originated. The total number of Coronavirus deaths and cured cases is also the highest in the province. China reported the first confirmed case of the Coronavirus infection originating in Wuhan in December 2019. The special administrative regions of Macau and Hong Kong reported the first confirmed cases on 22 January and 23 January, respectively. The province reported 14,840 new confirmed cases on a single day, on 12 February. The number of new cases reported in China, however, declined for the first time since the outbreak on 18 February and reached the lowest in March.

The spike in coronavirus numbers in Hubei occurred after healthcare workers began using a new methodology of CT scans for faster diagnosis of the disease. Nucleic acid tests were used earlier to evaluate suspected cases. China has started reporting cases confirmed using the new methodology under the clinically diagnosed category.

Some of the Coronavirus confirmed cases in Hong Kong were reported to have spread through open vent pipes within a residential building named Hong Mei House. Two confirmed cases were reported from among 100 residents living in 30 apartments in the building. The remaining residents were shifted to quarantine centers. Health authorities decided to perform a thorough cleaning and disinfection in the building.

USA currently has the highest number of Coronavirus cases. The first case in the country was reported in Washington on 21 January 2020 in a person who traveled to Wuhan and returned to the US. The second case was reported in Illinois in another person who traveled to Wuhan.

Some of the states with confirmed novel Coronavirus infection in the US are Arizona, California, Illinois, Massachusetts, Wisconsin, Texas, Washington and New York (which has the highest number of cases in the country). Community spread and delayed testing has been a major concern to Americans as enough test kits are not available across states, while shortage of ventilators continues to result in increased deaths.

The US earlier reported a case of community spread where the infected person had no travel history to the affected areas and did not come in contact with any infected persons. Among the total cases, 21 are reported from the Grand Princess Cruise ship, three from evacuees from China and 45 from the Diamond Princess Cruise ship.

Italy has the highest number of cases and deaths worldwide, and second to Spain in number of cases. The Head of Italy’s Democratic Party is among Coronavirus-infected. Italy reported its first death due to COVID-19 on 22 February, followed by another a day later and five more on 24 February. Fatalities have increased significantly since then.

The first two Coronavirus cases in Italy were reported on 30 January 2020. The patients were Chinese tourists who arrived in Rome and are currently placed under isolation in Spallanzani institute. As an immediate measure, Italy cancelled all direct flights to China and made quarantine mandatory to those traced to have contact with the infected. Educational institutes have been closed as a precautionary measure. Thousands of the infected Italians are in intensive care currently.

Spain declared a state of emergency on 14 March, as the country became the second-worst affected nation in the European Union. The government has imposed a nationwide lock-down for two weeks to control the spread of the disease. Citizens are restricted from going out of their homes except for essential needs. Coronavirus cases in Spain have been reported in the Canary Islands, Mallorca, Barcelona, Madrid, Seville, Villarreal and Tenerife. The organizers of World Mobile Congress to be held in Barcelona, Spain, cancelled the event considering the Coronavirus risks and the ongoing outbreak.

Coming down to Africa, South Africa has the highest number of cases in the continent. The country announced its first case on 05 March, when a 38-year-old male with a recent travel history to Italy tested positive for COVID-19.

On 15 March 2020, South Africa declared a national state of disaster. On 23 March 2020, President Cyril Ramaphosa issued a national lock-down lasting 21 days from 26 March 2020. The total number of affected cases in the country is about 2,173.
