With this coronavirus outbreak, various football leagues have been postponed. Most especially, the EURO 2020 and the Copa America 2020 which was supposed to be held this summer have now been moved to the summer of 2021 respectively, the Africa Nations championship and other sporting activities around the world. And of recent, the English Premier League has been extended from the 3rd of April to 30th April due to the coronavirus outbreak. With the outbreak of this virus, some players have seen their contracts terminated by their clubs and themselves. Most notably is Swiss club Sion FC after which they terminated the contracts of nine players from their first team squad for refusing to take pay-cut after the league was suspended. These players are Arsenal ex-players Alex Song and Johan Djourou, Christian Zock, Pajtim Kasami, Ermi Lenjani, Xavier Kouassi, Birama Ndoye, Mikel Facchinett and Seydou Doumbia. Another player to be on the wrong end due to the outbreak of this virus is former Chelsea and Nigeria player Mikel Obi. This comes as a result of his public criticism of the Turkish Super league for initially refusing to suspend their league when other leagues have already done so. With this, he decided to terminate his contract with his club Trabzonspor FC in order to be with his family in London.
Lists of Football Players that tested Positive to Coronavirus
Football players are no exception when it comes to this deadly virus as it spreads rapidly on a daily basis. Football players have been diagnosed as having the coronavirus which has, in turn, affected others including their fellow teammates, coaches, staff, etc. These players have received proper treatment so far while others are been directed to self-isolate to further curb the spread of the virus in their various teams.
Below are the lists of football players that tested positive to coronavirus pandemic especially in Europe top leagues.
Although not among the football players that tested positive to coronavirus, Mikel Arteta became the first manager to test positive to the virus across the Europe top leagues. The first player to follow suit was Callum Hudson-Odoi who was the first football player to test positive in the premier league. This led to the closure of Chelsea FC’s training base for that main time. But after following the health instructions and self-isolating, he has reported having recovered which he posted on his social media handle.
Bournemouth goalkeeper Artur Boruc is another player to go into self-isolation together with other four staff members as a result of displaying symptoms of coronavirus. Everton FC also announced that their entire squad was in self-isolation after it was confirmed that a player form the squad reported symptoms that are related to that of coronavirus. This equally led to the closure of their training ground. On that same note, Brendan Rodgers equally indicated that a number of Leicester City players had shown symptoms of coronavirus thereby enabling them to go into self-isolation.
Italy is the most affected country in Europe with the case of this coronavirus. No doubt that quite a number of football players that tested positive to coronavirus in Serie A are more than other top leagues. The most notable player to first test positive to this virus is Juventus defender Daniele Rugani. This comes as a case following the match between Juventus and Inter which was played behind closed doors. This case raised lots of concern from his teammates, with Cristiano Ronaldo opting to remain in his hometown of Madeira where he is currently in an effort to protect himself from contracting the virus himself. The player himself Daniel Rugani has already updated his fans on his social media platform on his recovery process and is deemed to be better now.
The second player to contract coronavirus in Serie A is Manolo Gabbiadini of Sampdoria. Sampdoria later confirmed that Gabbiadini’s team-mates Albin Ekdal, Antonino La Gumina, Morten Thorsby, Fabio Depaoli and Bartosz Bereszynski had also tested positive, as well as club doctor Amedeo Baldari.
Another football team in Serie A to be affected is Fiorentina. About three of their players namely; Dusan Vlahovic, Patrick Cutrone and German Pezzella have all tested positive for coronavirus.
Another Serie A to test positive for COVID-19 is Blaise Matuidi. The French midfielder becomes the second Juventus player to test positive to the virus after previously showing symptoms of the virus. It was confirmed that he was self –isolating at home on the 17th of March and therefore showing no symptoms currently.
Argentine star Paulo Dybala is the latest Serie A player to test positive to the Covid-19 virus. He’s now the third player in the juventus squad behind Daniel Rugani and Blaise Matuidi. The forward announced on twitter that he and his partner Oriana Sabatini had both tested positive and are self-isolating at home.
Spain is the second most affected European country behind Italy. The country has recorded several cases and deaths as a result of the spread of the coronavirus in the country. Real Madrid has been directly affected by the coronavirus outbreak, with the club currently placed on lockdown after a Blancos basketball player was diagnosed with the virus. The reason why the club is affected by this is a result of the fact that the capital club’s football and basketball teams share facilities, prompting both outfits to quarantine their players and staff.
Their local rival Barcelona has also closed down their facilities with football training and other activities in Camp Nou closed down for the time being. Although currently, none of the Camp Nou bases were among football players that tested positive to coronavirus.
Ezequiel Garay of Valencia CF became the first La Liga player to be tested positive for Covid-19. Later on, the club equally revealed that fellow center back Eliaquim Mangala also tested positive for the virus. Not only that, but other cases were also recorded in the team’s staff and players, most notably on March 16 whereby four new cases were also recorded in the team. All these players have been confirmed to be in their various homes on self-isolation and are already responding to treatment and in good health.
On March 17, Espanyol FC confirmed that six members of their first-team squad and staff tested positive to coronavirus and they are self-isolating. Alaves FC on another note confirmed that on March 18, three players of their squad have contracted Covid-19 and are told to self-isolate in their homes.
Not only that, but Elche has also already confirmed that one of their players has tested positive for the virus and is currently self-isolating.
Germany was not left out with respect to the list of football players that tested positive to coronavirus. Paderborn defender Luca Kilian became the first Bundesliga player to contract the disease but recovered quickly from the virus. While on that same note, Hannover defender Timo Hubers tested positive for coronavirus with the sporting director of Paderborn Martin Przondziono telling SZ that the player had two days of real fever and chills, but the current state now is that he’s better.
Although no case has been recorded in Ligue 1 all games in the league have been postponed, and most notably PSG has suspended first-team training. But the case is quite different in ligue2 as South Korean international Hyun-Jun Suk, who plays for Ligue 2 side Troyes, tested positive after not feeling well for few days.

Away from Europe down to Asia, China in particular where the deadly Coronavirus first surfaced; the latest result from there is that former Manchester United player Marouane Fellaini has been diagnosed with the virus following his return to his Chinese Super League club Shandong Luneng. The midfielder returned to the club on Friday to join up with his team-mates but have now tested positive as recorded on Sunday, 22 March.
